Cuppa was born in Spring 2020 when school closed down due to COVID-19. Like many primary special educators, I struggled to create content that would reach my young students. Some of them had autism. All of them had learning disabilities and speech needs. The one idea that kept coming back to me, and one I’ve used repeatedly in my classroom, is to utilize what they love.
I began researching Boom Cards™ and how to make them. I loved that I could essentially create “video games” teaching any skill that also involved beloved characters and themes that captured their interest.
At the same time, I have an adult son with cerebral palsy and severe cognitive delays. His inability to communicate, not to mention his constant state of pain, makes him irritable. I use a variety of visual supports for him at home to keep him on task and ease transitions.
In my 13 years as a special educator (ages 5-13), I’ve come across many learning styles and behaviors – in addition to my son’s. You might say I’ve spent the last 21 years thinking outside the box. Let my Boom Cards™, visual supports, blog and emails help motivate your own students or child(ren). This is what Cuppa Special Tea is all about.
Do they struggle with transitions, staying on task, remembering to focus, or just getting through their day? I’ve got a visual for that!
In my blog and newsletters, I talk all things student motivation, behavior, rewards, and how to keep them on track!
